Chevrolet Sonic RS previewed ahead of Detroit, 1.4L turbo

At this year’s season opening Detroit show, Chevrolet unveiled its B-segment contender, the next gen Aveo called Sonic. The upcoming NAIAS 2012 will see the GM brand wheel out the hot version of the Sonic, tagged RS. To go on sale in late 2012, the Sonic RS will be offered exclusively in five-door hatchback form – no sedan RS.

Go faster kit includes front sport seats, a thicker steering wheel with flat bottom, a new shift knob, aluminum sport pedals, specific instrument panel graphics and RS-specific interior trim colour. Outside, the RS is set apart by a deep air dam design and vertical intakes at the edges of the fascia that house the fog lamps.

Under the hood, the RS will come with the same 1.4L Ecotec turbo that powers top spec Sonics. This 138 hp/200 Nm unit is matched with a six-speed manual or six-speed auto gearbox. Unique gear ratios for the stick shift and a different final drive ratio for the auto gives the Sonic RS a “sportier feel” than non-RS models.

The suspension combines front MacPherson struts and an axle-mount compound link-type torsion beam, with gas-charged shocks. Front and rear tracks are identical at 1,509 mm for well-planted stability and balance, Chevy says. The RS is the only Sonic variant with four-wheel disc brakes.

Man wins Lamborghini, crashes it six hours later

A US truck driver has crashed a $380,000 Lamborghini Murcielago Roadster just hours after winning it in a shopping centre raffle.

David Dopp was taking his family for joy rides in the 471kW lime green supercar when he “hit some black ice and spun out”, jumping a kerb and ploughing through a fence.

The 34-year-old from Salt Lake City told Associated Press the damage “isn’t super bad”, escaping with only a punctured wheel and oil pan, and front and rear panel scratches. No-one was hurt in the crash.

Police from Salt Lake City said the Murcielago’s low-profile tyres were not suited to the icy conditions and believe the car was simply too powerful. No charges were laid.

Despite enjoying only six hours with his Italian supercar, Dopp said he would be forced to sell it, as he doesn’t have the money for repairs or to pay the ongoing insurance fees, which cost US$7000 every six months.

“I already had offers on it. I’m going to sell it,” Dopp said. “I have bills more important than a Lamborghini. I’ve got a family to support.”

Unfortunately, the father of six never got the chance to enjoy his Lambo with the second part of the prize: US$5000 of driving lessons at Miller Motorsports Park. Dopp concedes he will drive more safely in the future.

Limited Edition Roush Stage 3 Ford Mustang is Flashier And A Bit More Exclusive

Looking to buy a 2012 Roush Stage 3 Ford Mustang that’s flashier and a bit more exclusive? Then check out the Roush Performance Hyper-Series that adds a limited edition appearance package in addition to all the mechanical upgrades for the 540-hp Mustang beast.

The RS3 Mustang Hyper-Series comes with a choice of four tasty color palettes: “Mat It Mango, “Gas It Green”, “Punch It Purple”, and “Launch It Lemon”. Roush Performance starts with a standard GT with black body paint, adds the requisite RS3 graphics, and then adds the limited edition color accent stripe that extends diagonally from the front fender to the door. “The materials used in the Hyper-Series graphics really allow these unique colors to pop and dance in the changing sunlight,” said Gary Jurick, VP and General Manager of Roush Performance.

The color scheme continues inside with accented suede door trim, leather seating, shift boot stitching, and two shifter knobs – one with the accent color and another with a toned-down finish. Roush is building just 25 of each color with each vehicle receiving a requisite serial number badge. Like other RS3 Mustangs, the Hyper Series is still rated at 540 HP and 465 lb-ft of torque.

Modifications include a 50-state legal TVS 2.3-liter, Roushcharger system, a Roush suspension that lowers the Mustang one inch, and a Roush-tuned exhaust.

Roush is releasing the package next month with an MSRP of $27,300, which is more than the $16,800 MSRP for the standard RS3 package, but includes many optional components such as the Performance Brake Package ($2,877), leather seats ($1,725), and Roush 20-inch wheels ($1,115).
